F&I add-ons: GAP, warranties and protection packages
After you agree on a car, you meet the finance and insurance (F&I) manager. They arrange the loan or lease and offer a menu of optional products. Here's how to look at that menu calmly.
First: they're optional
These products are optional. They are not a normal condition of getting approved for a loan. If you're told the bank requires one, ask to see that requirement in writing from the lender. You can also say "I'll think about it": many of these products can be bought later, or from your insurer or credit union.
The usual menu
| Product | What it does | Worth a look if… | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| GAP | Covers the gap between your insurance payout and what you still owe if the car is totaled or stolen. | Little money down, a long term, or negative equity rolled in. | Often available from your auto insurer or credit union. Many leases already include it. |
| Service contract ("extended warranty") | Pays for covered repairs, usually after the factory warranty ends. | You'll keep the car well past its factory warranty. | Manufacturer-backed vs. third-party, exclusions, deductible. It's often possible to buy one later, before the factory warranty runs out. |
| Tire & wheel | Repairs or replaces tires and wheels damaged by road hazards. | Low-profile tires, expensive wheels, rough roads. | Claim limits, deductibles, what counts as a road hazard. |
| Appearance / paint & fabric protection | Coatings and sealants, sometimes with a limited damage warranty. | Rarely a must-have. | What claims are actually covered. Prices often have a lot of room. |
| Theft etching | VIN etched on the windows to deter theft. | Your insurer gives a discount for it. | Do-it-yourself kits are inexpensive. |
| Prepaid maintenance | Oil changes and scheduled service paid upfront. | You'll service at that dealer anyway and the price beats paying as you go. | Check what the manufacturer already includes free. |
Turn "only $20 a month" into a real number
Products are usually presented as a small change to the payment. Ask for each product's total price, separately. $20 a month over a 72-month loan is $1,440, plus interest on top, because the product is financed with the car.
Tip: ask the F&I manager to show you the payment with no products first. Then add only what you decide you want.
Prices are usually negotiable
The same coverage can be priced very differently from one buyer to the next. It's normal to ask for a better price, to choose a higher deductible, or to pick a shorter term of coverage.
Changed your mind?
Many of these products can be canceled after purchase for a prorated refund, sometimes minus a fee. The terms are in each product's contract, so read the cancellation section and keep your copies. If the product was financed, the refund usually goes toward the loan.
What to say
"Before we look at the menu, please show me the payment with no products."
"Can you show me in writing where the lender requires that for approval?"
"I'm interested in the service contract, but not at that price. What's your best number? I can also buy coverage later."
Snap it or type the numbers. The free checker circles junk fees, add-ons and payment packing in about a minute. Nothing is uploaded.
